During the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out ways to make music by myself in my own home studio, and what began to emerge as my favorite solution was making virtual ensemble videos both for and of myself and for my students and friends.
What had previously been a way to help my students practice became form of expression and also eventually a revenue stream as I began to use those skills to help other musicians find their way toward making music during this time of separation and quiet performance halls. Sometimes it’s just good fun to sit down and make music– no makeup, no fancy hair, just playing. Amapola was a “One Take Wednesday” video, where I sat down and knocked out every part in one go, finishing the entire thing in 20 minutes. For this video and a lot of others I used the Acapella app on my iPhone, which makes this sort of thing easy and fun. I was surprised at how beautiful this was, and it’s become my favorite to listen to for sheer enjoyment of the clarinet sounds.
This one was my very first YouTube video! Clearly I had a lot to learn, but we all have to start somewhere, right? And if you haven’t covered Africa at some point, are you even a musician these days? 😂
